In my work, simple repeated shapes hand-painted on synthetic paper become a structure or grid through which fluid paint flows. Both free and contained, this flow presents a paradox for the eye; determined by gravity and evaporation rates, dried puddles of paint residue both enhance and contradict the grid. Using transparent paint on transparent “paper” allows me to layer sheets of painted grids, giving a sense of undefined depth and further confounding the regularity of shapes.
Because my paintings are so dependent on the natural flow of paint they often suggest biology, geology or landscape, and indeed, the colors and sensations of New Mexico landscapes are important inspirations for this work. Equally inspiring to my work is the light seen in the mind, the light of meditation.
Agnes Martin, one of my heroines, pointed out that “all art is experienced emotionally.” I’m aiming for feelings that are quietly life-affirming and joyful, that remain wordless and timeless, without narrative or complaint.
